History of Ajmer
The history of Ajmer
began when Raja Ajai Pal Chauhan established his capital
in this part of Rajasthan. Known as Ajaimeru in the past
Raja Ajai Pal's bastion was rechristened as Ajmer in the
later years.
Raja Ajai Pal constructed the imposing Taragarh Fort
atop a sandstone hillock that represented the regal
might of the great Chauhan rulers. The history of Ajmer
took an interesting turn during the rule of Raja Ajaideva
II; that is when Ajmer became an important center of
politics and a flourishing city.
According to the Acheleshwar stone inscription (1320 A.D.) and
the Hansi Inscription (1167 A.D.) the history of Chauhans can
be traced back to the lunar dynasty though several other records
state that the Chauhans are Suryavanshi's. So it is not really
clear whether they belong to the lunar or the solar dynasties.
The history of Ajmer sparkles with chivalrous exploits of
the great Prithvi Raj Chauhan who reigned supreme in this
part of Rajasthan for more than 13 years. He learnt a lot
from his mother Kapuridevi, who was an able stateswoman.
