History of Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer was established in the heart of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan in 1156 A.D. by a local chieftain, Rawal Jaisal.

Rawal Jaisal was a Bhatti Rajput and a descendant of the Yadu Vamsi clan. Rawal Jaisal led a team of desert marauders who raided neighboring desert kingdoms till Rawal Jaisal decided to establish his kingdom on top of the Trikuta Hill.

According to a famous legend, the Hindu deity Lord Krishna predicted that a Yadav descendant would establish a flourishing kingdom atop the formidable Trikuta Hill in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India

History of Jaisalmer
According to a famous legend, the Hindu deity Lord Krishna predicted that a Yadav descendant would establish a flourishing kingdom atop the formidable Trikuta Hill in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India.

Jaisalmer flourished during the medieval ages and became an important gem in royal Rajasthan's glittering crown. Jaisalmer lay in the path of an important ancient trade route that linked India to Arabia, Persia, Egypt, West and Africa. Unprecedented riches, tenacity, warmth, grit and excellent governance helped Jaisalmer to flourish in a waterless land with royal finesse.

It is believed that the local Bhatti Rajput rulers imposed heavy taxes on camel caravans laden with silks, gold, silver, spices and other trade items, that crossed this golden land.

Till date the narrow Jaisalmer streets emanate an old world aura reminiscent of traditional way of life. See craftsmen at work in narrow alleyways creating unimaginably beautiful objects d' art, silver jewellery and embroidered textiles.
