Shopping in Jaisalmer
From Rajasthani mirror work to exquisite embroidery. From rugs and blankets to finely cut antiques, Jaisalmer has it all and invites you with open arms to come and shop till you drop in this majestic city. The shopping spots are within the fort and include Sadar Bazar, Sonaron ka Bass Manak Chowk, Pansari Bazar, Gandhi Darshan, Seema gram and various Rajasthani Govt. shops.
Zila Khadi Gramodan Parishad has an excellent range of reasonably priced carpets, shawls and garments in silk, wool and cotton. Khadi Gramodyog Bhawan also sells Bandhani and textiles. On the laneway leading up to the Jain temples within the fort is the Light of the East, which sells crystals and rare mineral specimens, including zeolite.
Every plausible kind of conventional Rajasthani textile is sold at shops in and around the fort. Most of the pieces on offer are specially made for the tourist trade at craft centres such as Sanganer near Jaipur, but older garments, or patches worked into wall hangings, can normally be found at the more established dealers. The best place to however start looking is the Barmer Embroidery House, near the Patwon-ki-Haveli and Gangana Para, in the north of town. The best souvenirs to take back home from your wondrous visit to Jaisalmer are the much-celebrated Puppets of the Rajasthani culture.
