This unique dance form involves ratification of the episodes of the great epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana. The mood, emotions and inner sensibilities are conveyed through the facial expressions of the Kathakali dancers and thus require great talent and expertise. A vocalist sings the narrative verse, while drums, cymbals and other instruments provide a continuous musical accompaniment and sound effects at dramatic moments. The dance is performed with intricate masks and costumes. The costumes are of vibrant colours while the facial makeup is done by the artist himself and a distinct headgear made of wood is worn during the play.
The Aharya (Make-up) has many faces like Pacha, Kathi, Thadi, Minukku etc. Kathakali has a harmonious combination of literature (Sahithyam), music (Sangeetham), painting (Chithram), acting (Natyam) and dance (Nritham). All the five forms of art have a very important place in this combination. Its literature is narrative, poetic and dramatic. The colors and the make-up together denote the nature of the character. The dancers are not allowed to speak during the performance. Their hand movement's known as Mudras along with their facial expressions says it all. Considering all the Mudras and their separations, there are a total of 470 symbols used in Kathakali.
