Kollam Backwaters
Known as Quilon in the earlier times, Kollam is located at a distance of just 71 kms from the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. Resting along the Ashthamudi Lake, Kollam is one of the most beautiful cities of Kerala and an important cashew nut processing and trading hub. The place is also one of the oldest Ports along the Malabar Coast. The temples of Kollam, built in the traditional ornate traditional style, are an architectural marvel and visitors delight.
The most stunning feature of Kollam is the Ashthamudi Lake that covers almost 30% of the city. The Lake is an ideal Backwater Destination and is visited by numerous people throughout the year. Being host to many Backwater Tours and cruises the most famed is the eight-hour long journey on boat from Kollam to Alappuzha. This 8 hour long journey is passed in a blink of an eye while cruising on a Houseboat amidst a luxurious ambience. The Lake literally having 8 arms covers a main portion of the Kollam district in the South.
Besides the enthralling Backwaters, other popular tourist attraction of Kollam includes the Mata Amrithanandamayi Ashram, which is located in Vallikavu nearby. An international pilgrimage destination, the Ashram is known for its educational and medical institutes and also for personality of Ma Amrithanandamayi. Another famous tourist spot near Kollam is the historic Thangasseri Fort, of 18th century.
