Eravikulam National Park
Sprawled over an area of 97 sq. kms, the park was set up for the preservation of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, which is also its main inhabitant now. Located just 15 kms to the north of Munnar Hill Station, the Eravikulam National Park is situated in the Devikulam Taluk of the Idukki district. The place was created as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1975 and hasn't looked back since.
Besides the Nilgiri Tahr, which is a unique goat found in the South India; the Sanctuary is also home to Atlas Moth, Elephants, Sambhars, Gaurs, Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langurs, Tigers and Leopards. Apart from the Wildlife, the highest peak of South India, the Anamudi Peak (2,695 m); located within the park is an added attraction to the place. So for all the adventure loving people, Eravikulam proves to be an ideal trekking destination, amidst the enthralling wildlife to keep you company.
For the people who have visited the fascinating place of Eravikulam, the natural beauty and the picturesque scenery of the place have often been compared to the Alpine Meadows of Switzerland. As Eravikulam witnesses huge downpour in the monsoon season, the months from September to February is the best period to visit the place.
