Periyar National Park
One of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in the country, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary attracts loads of tourists to the place all the year round. Spread over an expanse of 777 sq. kms, the Sanctuary is a perfect place to watch animal behaving naturally as they move about in their natural habitat.
An enthralling feature of the Periyar National Park is a mesmerizing beautiful Lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River right in the middle of the Sanctuary. Animals from all over the area come to either take a dip in the cool waters or to simply bathe in the lake, offering the visitors a rare and memorable view of the animals playing in water. From elephants to tigers, all can be spotted here.
Wild Elephants in large numbers can be seen moving about in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Besides them, tigers, Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer and Dole or Indian Wild Dog all can be seen in the region. The place at present is home to some 40 tigers. The bird population at the Sanctuary comprises of Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, and the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. The National Park is also a favoured haunt for the trekkers.
